Getting around Jamaica works best when you combine the right transport for each part of the trip, usually private transfers for airport days, route taxis for short local rides, Knutsford Express for intercity travel and a private driver or rental car for harder day trips. Jamaica has no useful passenger train network for travelers, public bus coverage is uneven outside main corridors and the road system carries most visitor movement.
Jamaica is larger on the ground than it looks on a map. A 45-mile ride can take 90 minutes because the road passes towns, school zones, hills, pedestrians, animals, taxis stopping for passengers and slow trucks. I have worked in Jamaican hospitality and guest movement for many years, and the cleanest trips are planned around real road time rather than straight-line distance.
The honest overview
There are five main ways to move around Jamaica as a visitor.
Route taxis are shared local taxis that run fixed routes. They are cheap and useful for short rides when you know the route. They are not designed around luggage, airport arrivals or visitors who need door-to-door service.
Knutsford Express is the main visitor-friendly intercity coach option. It connects major towns with scheduled, air-conditioned service and is useful for longer moves between places such as Kingston, Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, Mandeville and Port Antonio.
Private drivers handle airport transfers, day trips, villa pickups and late-night rides. They cost more, but they reduce confusion and give you control over timing.
Rental cars suit confident drivers who want freedom, especially in Port Antonio, the south coast, the Blue Mountains or longer routes. They are less useful for a simple beach stay.
JUTC buses and other public bus services help many Jamaicans move daily, especially in the Kingston region and selected newer rural routes. Most short-term visitors will find them less direct than route taxis, coaches or arranged drivers.
A good Jamaica plan often uses two or three options. For example, you might book a private airport transfer to Negril, use route taxis along the strip, then hire a driver for YS Falls. A Kingston and Port Antonio trip might use a private airport pickup, a driver for the Blue Mountains and Knutsford Express for a later intercity move.
Route taxis demystified
Route taxis are part of daily Jamaican movement. They follow licensed routes, pick up passengers along the way and charge separate fares. They do not operate like private taxis. The driver may stop often and the car may fill with other passengers.
Licensed route taxis should have red public passenger vehicle plates, “Route Taxi” written on the doors, route details printed on the outside, a roof sign, Transport Authority identification and the required check pattern. The driver should display proper identification.
Do not enter an unmarked car offering a cheap ride. Red plates alone are useful, but also look for route markings and driver identification. A private charter taxi may also have red plates, so ask before getting in if the ride is shared route service or a private fare.
Using route taxis well
Stand on the side of the road that faces your direction of travel. Watch where locals wait. In many towns, drivers slow, tap the horn or call out the route. You can raise a hand to show interest.
Say your stop before entering. Ask the fare in Jamaican dollars if you are unsure. Carry small notes and coins. A J$500 or J$1,000 note is easier than a large bill for a short ride.
Route taxis are best during daylight and early evening in familiar areas. They are not ideal late at night, with heavy bags or after drinking. They can also be tight, hot and fast.
Current route taxi fares
Jamaica increased public passenger fares in June 2026 and scheduled a second increase for July 2026. For route taxis, the June 2026 formula is a J$122 base plus J$7.56 per kilometre. From July 1, 2026, the base moves to J$132 and the kilometre rate moves to J$8.64.
Actual passenger fares are rounded and tied to set route stages. That means a short local ride may be quoted as a simple amount rather than calculated in front of you. Ask before boarding and pay in Jamaican dollars when possible.
Use route taxis for short local trips in areas such as Negril, Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, Kingston and Savanna-la-Mar when you know the direction. Do not use them as your main airport plan on a first trip.
Knutsford Express for intercity moves
Knutsford Express is the easiest scheduled coach option for many visitors who do not want to rent a car. It runs air-conditioned coaches between major towns and has a published schedule and fare table. The network includes Kingston, Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, Port Antonio, Mandeville, Spanish Town and other locations.
This works well when your hotel is near a terminal or you can arrange a short taxi at both ends. It is especially useful for solo travelers because one seat can cost much less than a private intercity transfer.
Strong uses for Knutsford Express
Kingston to Montego Bay is a common route when you want city time and a north coast stay. Kingston to Ocho Rios also works for a city and waterfall pairing. Montego Bay to Negril can be useful when the schedule fits your flight and your hotel can arrange the final ride.
Port Antonio routes can help with eastern travel, though schedules need close checking because service frequency may be lower than main north coast routes.
Limits to know
The coach does not always drop you at the exact hotel. You may need a taxi from the terminal to the property. Add that cost before comparing the coach against a private driver.
The schedule controls the day. A flight delay can cause a missed coach. A late arrival may leave no practical departure. Luggage rules and check-in times should be read before travel.
For families of four, a private transfer may become close in price once coach seats, terminal taxis and waiting time are added. For one or two adults, the coach can be a strong value.
Hiring a driver for the day
A private driver is the most flexible option for day trips, remote sites and routes with several stops. It is common for visitors to book a driver for waterfalls, south coast tours, Blue Mountain visits, Port Antonio days, Kingston music stops or transfers between bases.
A full-day private driver commonly starts around US$160 to $250 for a standard car or small van, depending on route length, fuel, waiting time, vehicle size and the driver’s license category. Longer cross-island days, larger vans and late returns can cost more. Short local private taxi trips may range from about US$10 to $40 depending on distance and area.
Ask for a transport-only price first. Then ask what a full day with stops would include. Entrance fees, food, guide fees and tips are often separate.
Finding a reliable driver
Start with your hotel, villa host or a transport provider recommended by a trusted local contact. Ask for the driver’s full name, phone number, vehicle plate, license status and total price.
A good driver should be clear about route timing and should not pressure you into extra paid stops. Local knowledge is valuable, but the day should still follow the plan you agreed on.
For long days, confirm if the price includes driver waiting time. A waterfall and lunch day is different from a quick drop-off and return pickup.
Driver etiquette
Be ready on time. Pay in the agreed currency. Tip separately if service was good and the driver handled waiting, luggage or changes well.
If you want to stop for a roadside meal, ask the driver where they would eat while working. Those answers often lead to better food than the places built around tour buses.
Renting and driving yourself
Renting a car gives you freedom. It also gives you responsibility for left-side driving, local road conditions, parking, fuel, insurance and night movement.
Jamaica drives on the left. Visitors can usually drive with a valid home-country license for a limited stay, but rental companies may set their own age rules, deposit requirements and insurance rules. Many companies require drivers to be at least 21, sometimes 25 for some vehicle classes.
A rental car works best when you are staying in Port Antonio, Treasure Beach, a remote villa, the Blue Mountains or making several rural day trips. It is less useful for a central Negril beach stay, where taxis and walking along the sand cover most needs.
Road conditions
Major roads between resort towns are paved, though you should still expect potholes, uneven edges, speed bumps, narrow town sections and sudden stops. Rural roads can be rough, steep, poorly lit and slow after rain.
Avoid your first long drive after a late flight. Avoid rural driving at night. Use a navigation app, but listen to local advice because the fastest-looking road may not be the best road that day.
Rental checks
Photograph the car before leaving the lot. Include tires, windshield, bumpers, mirrors, fuel level and any scratches. Confirm the insurance excess, deposit hold, roadside assistance number and rules for driving on unpaved roads.

Moving around Negril, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios
Each resort area has a different transport pattern. Choose the local method that fits the road, time of day and group.
Negril
Negril is split between Seven Mile Beach, town and the West End cliffs. During the day, you can walk long sections of beach. Road walking is less pleasant because sidewalks are limited in places.
Route taxis run along key sections and can help with short rides between town, the beach and parts of the West End. Ask the fare before entering. Use a private taxi at night, with luggage or when heading to a specific cliff restaurant.
A central beach stay reduces taxi spending. A far West End stay usually requires more arranged rides.
Montego Bay
Montego Bay has the airport, Hip Strip, downtown, Rose Hall and several resort corridors. Distances are short in miles but traffic and road layout can stretch rides.
Use prebooked transfers from the airport. Around the Hip Strip, walking is possible in active daytime sections, but private taxis are better at night. Rose Hall and larger resort zones usually need taxis for off-property meals or shopping.
Ask the hotel for taxi pricing before leaving. A ride that seems short may be priced as a private visitor transfer.
Ocho Rios
Ocho Rios works well with arranged short taxis because many attractions sit near town. Dunn’s River, gardens, beaches and river sites are often within a manageable drive.
Cruise days can increase traffic and crowd pressure. Start early for famous attractions. Use a driver for multi-stop days rather than trying to connect several route taxis between attractions.
Central stays reduce movement costs. Resorts outside town need more planned rides.

The cheapest transport is not always the lowest total cost. A cheap ride that adds two changes, a long wait and a final taxi may cost less in money but more in time. A private vehicle can be the better value for four people heading to a remote attraction.
Picking your transport mix by trip style
Beach week in Negril
Book a private transfer from Montego Bay airport to the hotel. Walk the beach during the day. Use route taxis for short local rides if you are comfortable with the system. Use a private taxi at night and book a driver for one south coast day trip.
All-inclusive stay in Montego Bay
Use the hotel or a prebooked airport transfer. Arrange private taxis for off-property meals or shopping. Use organised excursions only for activities that are far from the hotel or require equipment.
Ocho Rios activity week
Use prebooked airport transport. Hire a driver for days with more than one attraction. Use short taxis for town movement. Time major sites around cruise traffic.
Kingston and Blue Mountains
Use a private airport pickup or hotel-arranged taxi in Kingston. Hire a driver for Blue Mountain roads. Use Knutsford Express or a private transfer if you continue to the north coast.
Port Antonio or Treasure Beach
Consider a rental car only if you are confident driving on the left and plan repeated local movement. Otherwise, arrange a trusted driver for transfers and selected day trips. Public transport is possible, but it takes more local knowledge and time.
Solo budget trip
Use Knutsford Express between major towns and route taxis for daylight local rides. Choose accommodation close to terminals or central areas. Keep late-night travel private and simple.
Family or group trip
Book private transfers and a driver for full-day trips. The group price can compare well against per-seat coach fares, and door-to-door movement reduces waiting, luggage handling and missed connections.
Practical rules for every ride
Agree on the price before the trip begins. Confirm the currency. Ask if the fare is per person or per vehicle.
Use licensed transport. Look for red public passenger plates, route markings and driver identification where relevant. For tour vehicles and airport transfers, use a registered provider or a driver arranged by your accommodation.
Keep small Jamaican bills for local rides. Do not expect every driver to break a large note.
Save the driver’s number after a good ride. A reliable taxi contact can improve the whole trip.
Avoid unfamiliar rural roads after dark. If a transfer must happen at night, use a known driver and give the hotel your arrival time.
Build time into departure days. Jamaica road movement can slow without much warning. For airport returns, leave earlier than the most optimistic estimate.
