One Week in Jamaica, Itineraries That Respect Your Time

Three honest itinerary frameworks built around real transfer times, including a Negril base week, a two-base classic and a deeper ten-night route
One Week in Jamaica, Itineraries That Respect Your Time

A good Jamaica itinerary uses one base for five nights, one or two bases for seven nights and two or three bases for ten nights, because road transfers can take several hours between resort regions.

Jamaica looks compact on a map, but the island takes time on the ground. Montego Bay to Negril can take around 75 to 100 minutes. Montego Bay to Ocho Rios often takes about 90 minutes to two hours. Negril to Ocho Rios can run three hours or more in clear conditions. Port Antonio sits even farther from the western resort belt.

I was born in Jamaica and have worked across hospitality, events and guest planning for more than 20 years. The best itineraries I see are the ones that leave space. They let the beach, food, music and roads breathe instead of turning Jamaica into a checklist.

Trip math first

Most Jamaica visitors are working with five to ten nights. Seven or eight nights is the comfortable range for a first trip because it allows one main base, one or two day trips and enough slow time.

The first decision is one base or two bases.

One base works when the trip has a clear focus. Negril for beach and cliffs. Montego Bay for resort convenience. Ocho Rios for waterfalls and attractions. Kingston for music, food and city culture. Port Antonio for the east.

Two bases work when you have at least seven nights and the transfer creates a useful contrast. Negril plus Ocho Rios gives beach and waterfalls. Kingston plus Port Antonio gives city culture and green east. Montego Bay plus Negril gives airport convenience and a slower beach finish.

Three bases work better with ten nights or more. Below that, the trip starts to feel like packing and unpacking.

Use these transfer ranges for planning.

RoutePlanning time
Montego Bay Airport to Negril75 to 100 minutes
Montego Bay Airport to Montego Bay resorts15 to 35 minutes
Montego Bay Airport to Ocho Rios90 minutes to 2 hours
Kingston Airport to Kingston hotels25 to 50 minutes
Kingston to Port Antonio2.5 to 3.5 hours
Negril to Ocho Rios3.5 to 4.5 hours
Negril to Kingston4 to 5 hours
Ocho Rios to Port Antonio3 to 4 hours
Montego Bay to Treasure Beach2.5 to 3.5 hours

After Hurricane Melissa, some hotels and roads may still have repair work or service changes in 2026. Jamaica’s official hotel reopening list is updated on a rolling basis, and reopening dates can change. Confirm your exact property before locking in nonrefundable plans.

The Negril base week

A Negril base week is the easiest seven-night trip for travelers who want beach days, local food, cliff sunsets and one or two south coast outings.

Fly into Montego Bay. Book a private transfer to Negril. Stay on Seven Mile Beach if you want easy swimming and walkable restaurants. Stay on the West End if you want cliffs, sunsets and smaller properties.

Day 1

Arrive at Montego Bay Airport and transfer to Negril. Keep the first evening simple. Eat near the hotel, walk the beach if you arrive before dark and avoid planning a major activity.

Day 2

Use the beach properly. Swim early, walk Seven Mile Beach, settle into the town and learn your nearest food, taxi and ATM options. If you are staying on the cliffs, take a daytime taxi to the beach.

Day 3

Book a water day. Choose snorkeling, a glass-bottom boat, Booby Cay, a catamaran or simple beach time with no schedule. Keep the activity local.

Day 4

Take the West End afternoon. Swim from a managed cliff spot, visit a cave bar, see the lighthouse if access works that day and stay for sunset. Rick’s is the famous version. Smaller cliff restaurants give a quieter version.

Day 5

Use this as the main day trip. YS Falls, Mayfield Falls, Black River or Appleton Estate are the best fits from Negril. Do not try to force Ocho Rios from Negril unless that long drive is part of the plan.

Day 6

Keep a slow day after the day trip. Sleep later, eat locally, get a massage, walk the beach and save energy for live music or a better dinner.

Day 7

Choose the final activity close to Negril. A beach brunch, short boat ride, cliff lunch or shopping stop works better than a long tour before departure day.

Day 8

Transfer back to Montego Bay Airport. Leave earlier than the fastest drive time suggests. Airport days should not be tight.

This itinerary suits couples, first-time visitors, solo travelers and anyone who wants the easiest version of Jamaica without changing hotels.

The classic two-base week

A two-base week works when each base gives you something different. The most practical first-trip pairings are Negril plus Ocho Rios or Negril plus Montego Bay.

Negril plus Ocho Rios

This pairing gives you western beach time and north coast attractions.

Spend four nights in Negril and three nights in Ocho Rios, or the reverse if flights fit better. Many travelers prefer to start with Ocho Rios and end in Negril because Negril feels slower for the final days.

Ocho Rios gives you Dunn’s River Falls, Blue Hole, gardens, river tubing, beaches and resort options. Negril gives you Seven Mile Beach, the West End cliffs, sunsets and south coast day trips.

The transfer between Negril and Ocho Rios is long enough to count as a travel day. Do not schedule a major activity on both sides of that move. Stop for lunch, check in and keep the evening light.

A sample seven-night frame:

NightBaseFocus
1Ocho RiosArrival and easy dinner
2Ocho RiosDunn’s River or Blue Hole
3Ocho RiosGardens, tubing or beach
4NegrilTransfer and sunset
5NegrilSeven Mile Beach
6NegrilWest End cliffs
7NegrilSouth coast or slow day

Fly into Montego Bay for this if flight choice is better. Compare Kingston only if the Ocho Rios portion comes first and the fare or arrival time is much stronger.

Negril plus Montego Bay

This pairing is simpler and lighter. Montego Bay gives airport convenience, resort comfort, golf, Rose Hall, short transfers and easier arrival or departure days. Negril gives the deeper beach stay.

This works well for families, weddings, short trips and travelers who want one resort block plus one more local-feeling block.

A good split is two nights in Montego Bay and five nights in Negril, or three and four. Do not overcomplicate the Montego Bay section. Use it for arrival ease, one excursion and a rested start.

Ten nights with the east included

Port Antonio needs time. It is one of Jamaica’s most beautiful regions for rivers, coves, green hills and quieter stays, but it is far from Negril and Montego Bay.

A ten-night route can include the east without rushing.

Kingston plus Port Antonio plus Negril

This is the deeper traveler’s route.

Start with two nights in Kingston. Visit music sites, eat well, see the Blue Mountains if timing allows and use a trusted driver.

Move to Port Antonio for three nights. Visit Frenchman’s Cove, Boston Bay, Reach Falls, Rio Grande rafting and quiet beaches. Stay flexible because weather and river conditions can change.

Finish with five nights in Negril. This gives you the beach ending after the more active east.

The hard part is the Port Antonio to Negril transfer. It is a long cross-island move. You can break it with a night in Montego Bay or Ocho Rios if you want less strain, but that adds another base.

Kingston plus Port Antonio plus Ocho Rios

This version keeps the route more logical. Fly into Kingston, spend two nights in the city, spend three or four nights in Port Antonio and finish with three or four nights in Ocho Rios or Montego Bay.

It gives less of the classic Negril beach ending, but it respects the road better.

Port Antonio is best for travelers who enjoy quieter areas, local food, rivers, small hotels and self-directed days. It is not the cleanest fit for visitors who want constant nightlife, big resorts or short transfers.

Five nights done without rushing

Five nights should be one base. Do not split the stay unless there is a special reason.

Choose Negril if you want the best beach-first version.

A simple five-night Negril frame:

DayPlan
1Arrive and transfer
2Seven Mile Beach
3West End cliffs and sunset
4YS Falls, Mayfield Falls or boat day
5Slow beach day and local dinner
6Depart

Choose Montego Bay if you want the easiest airport logistics, a resort stay and less road time.

Choose Ocho Rios if waterfalls and attractions are more important than long beach days.

Choose Kingston if music, food, culture and the Blue Mountains matter more than resort time.

A five-night trip has no room for “while we are there” thinking. Pick one region and let it work.

Slow days by design

A slow day is not wasted in Jamaica. It is often the day that makes the trip feel right.

Build one slow day after arrival. Build another after a long day trip. If you are changing bases, keep the transfer day light.

A slow day can include a morning swim, late breakfast, fruit stand, massage, short taxi ride, local lunch, nap and sunset. That is a full Jamaica day without one ticketed attraction.

Families need slow days because heat, meals, children, sunscreen and transport all take energy. Couples need them because the best conversations often happen without a driver waiting. Groups need them because people move at different speeds.

The faster the itinerary looks on paper, the worse it usually feels on the island.

Adapting each route

Couples

Choose fewer bases and better rooms. A Negril beach and cliff split can work beautifully for couples. Ocho Rios plus Negril also works if waterfalls and beach are both priorities.

Book one special dinner, one water day and one road trip. Leave the rest open.

Friends

Friends’ trips work well in Negril, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Pick accommodation close to food and nightlife. Decide transport rules before drinking becomes part of the night.

A villa can work for groups, but only with clear plans for groceries, cooking, driving and payments.

Families

Families should reduce transfers. Choose Negril for beach ease, Montego Bay for short airport transfers or Ocho Rios for attractions. Book private transfers, confirm room setup and keep tour days spaced apart.

Avoid late arrivals with long drives when children are tired.

Solo travelers

Solo travelers can use Kingston, Negril or Ocho Rios well. Stay central, use known taxis and avoid isolated walks at night. Knutsford Express can help with intercity moves when the schedule fits.

Booking order

Book flights first, but only after choosing the region. Montego Bay works best for Negril, Montego Bay, Falmouth and many Ocho Rios trips. Kingston works best for Kingston, Port Antonio and the Blue Mountains.

Book the base next. Do not book activities before you know where you are sleeping.

Book transfers before arrival, especially for Negril, Port Antonio, Treasure Beach and late flights.

Book major activities after the bases and transfers are clear. Leave some days flexible for weather, energy and local advice.

Check hotel status before final payment if traveling in 2026. Some recovery and reopening timelines after Hurricane Melissa may still affect specific properties.

A good Jamaica itinerary feels simple. The island supplies the rest through food, music, water, people and place.
