Negril for long beach days and slower weeks
Negril is the clearest choice when the trip begins with swimming and ends with sunset. The area has two main coastal settings. Seven Mile Beach gives you sand, shallow entry, beach walks and easy access to casual restaurants. The West End gives you limestone cliffs, sea ladders, deep-water swimming and smaller properties spread along a narrow coastal road.
Seven Mile Beach
Stay on the beach when you want to walk between hotels, bars and meals during daylight. The central and southern stretches place more independent businesses within reach. The northern end around Bloody Bay has larger resorts, calmer managed grounds and fewer outside restaurants within a comfortable walk.
Families usually find the sandy entry easier than the cliffs. Solo travelers and couples also benefit from being able to move along the shore without arranging a car for every meal. Rooms close to active beach bars may hear music at night, so ask about the exact building before booking.
Vendor approaches are common. Most are sales attempts for fruit, massages, boat trips, souvenirs and other services. A calm “No thank you” or “Mi good” usually ends the exchange. The West End cliffs

Negril in 2026
Negril has recovered strongly after Hurricane Melissa. The official rolling hotel list checked in June 2026 shows most listed beach, cliff and resort properties open. A smaller group remains closed and three larger resorts list August 25, 2026 as their planned reopening date. Reopening dates can move.
Ask about the exact room block, beach section, pool, restaurants, lifts and nearby building work before paying a nonrefundable rate. A property can accept guests while part of its grounds remains under repair.
Negril suits travelers who are happy with a slower week and a few selected outings. It may frustrate travelers who expect polished sidewalks, quick cross-island travel or constant organised entertainment. Montego Bay for airport convenience and resort choice
Montego Bay is the easiest landing point for many first-time visitors because Sangster International Airport sits close to the main hotel zones. Depending on the property and traffic, the transfer may take about 10 to 35 minutes. That short ride has real value on a four or five-night trip.
The wider Montego Bay area includes the city, the Hip Strip, Ironshore, Rose Hall and coastal resort districts extending east and west. A hotel carrying a Montego Bay address may sit far from central restaurants or beaches, so check the map before booking.
The Hip Strip
The Hip Strip works for travelers who want restaurants, shops, beach clubs and nightlife within a compact visitor area. The airport is close and taxis are easy to arrange.
The area feels commercial and busy. Traffic, music and vendor attention are part of the setting. Several popular beaches charge entry or operate as managed clubs. Choose a room away from the road when sleep is a priority.
A short stay can work well here because you can land, reach the hotel quickly and begin the trip the same afternoon. Families should check road crossings and beach access. Solo travelers may appreciate the activity during daylight, while still using arranged transport at night.
Rose Hall and the eastern resort corridor
The eastern corridor suits travelers who want large grounds, golf, several restaurants and a resort-led schedule. Many properties are designed for guests to spend most of the week on site.
You gain space and facilities. You will usually need a taxi or driver for independent meals, the city and most local activity. A room rate that includes food may be easier to manage than an independent plan in an isolated resort district.
Montego Bay in 2026
Recovery is mixed by property. The official June 2026 list shows many hotels operating, along with several closures and staged reopenings. Some properties list dates later in 2026 and several list 2027. Check the current room inventory and open facilities directly.
Do not rely only on a booking page showing availability. Ask the property to confirm restaurants, beach access, pools, entertainment and the selected room category. Travelers planning weddings or group trips should request a written list of operating facilities.
Montego Bay suits short trips, all-inclusive holidays, weddings, families and groups that value a fast airport transfer. It is less suited to travelers seeking a small-town feel or long uninterrupted beach walks.
Ocho Rios for waterfalls and active days
Ocho Rios gives you the highest concentration of well-known visitor activities within a short drive. Dunn’s River Falls, river tubing, gardens, swimming holes and several coastal outings sit around the wider St Ann area.
The town and surrounding coast have several types of accommodation. Central hotels put shops, restaurants and the cruise port nearby. Properties east and west of town may have larger grounds, quieter coves or garden settings. Some sit under the wider Ocho Rios label while being 20 to 40 minutes from the centre.
Central Ocho Rios
Choose the centre when activities and easy taxi access lead the plan. You can reach many attractions without paying for a full-day cross-island tour. Restaurants, shops and services are close.
The port changes the town on cruise days. Streets, shops and major attractions become busier after ships arrive. Start popular outings near opening time or plan them later in the afternoon after organised groups begin returning to port.
Central beaches are generally smaller than Negril’s main stretch. Some are linked to hotels or managed access points. Confirm the exact beach arrangement before selecting a property based on a sea-view photo.
The wider St Ann coast
Hotels outside town can offer gardens, private coves and a quieter night. They work well for couples, families and travelers who plan several organised trips.
Check the distance to Ocho Rios centre and the transfer time from the airport. The label may cover areas such as Runaway Bay, Tower Isle and Oracabessa. Each has a different relationship with town, beaches and attractions.
Ocho Rios in 2026
Most listed properties in the official Ocho Rios area are open. One large listed resort has a December 1, 2026 reopening date and current status should still be checked for any property affected by repair work.
Ocho Rios suits families, first-time visitors who want several paid activities and travelers who prefer short drives to major sites. It may feel too scheduled for people seeking long beach days and little movement. A seven-night stay here can support three or four active days without crossing the island.
Port Antonio for the quieter eastern coast
Port Antonio and the wider Portland coast suit travelers drawn to rivers, small coves, mountains and lower-density accommodation. The region has fewer large resorts and a stronger mix of guesthouses, villas and small hotels.
Frenchman’s Cove, Winnifred Beach, Reach Falls, Rio Grande rafting and the Blue Lagoon area create several strong days within Portland. Rainfall is higher than on parts of the western coast, which supports the region’s dense vegetation and flowing rivers. It also means plans should allow for showers and changing road conditions.
Town and nearby districts
Port Antonio town gives you markets, banks, restaurants and local transport. Hotels outside town around Drapers, San San and Fairy Hill place you closer to coves and water attractions.
A remote hillside property may have a fine view and few nearby meal choices. Ask about breakfast, dinner, taxi contacts and the road to the hotel. A lower room rate can lose its saving through repeated private rides.
The east is quiet at night. You will find bars and occasional music, though the range is much smaller than Kingston, Negril or Montego Bay. Travelers who want a busy evening every night should choose another region or split the stay.
Blue Lagoon access
The Blue Lagoon remains a major Portland site. Public access is officially free, parking is limited and management of the area has remained under public discussion. The government proposed dock repairs in 2026 and legal action connected to access was active in June.

Port Antonio in 2026
All accommodation entries shown in the official Port Antonio section were listed as open when checked in June 2026. Individual facilities can still change, so confirm pools, restaurants and road access for smaller properties.
Port Antonio suits couples, repeat Jamaica visitors, nature-focused trips and travelers comfortable arranging drivers. It may frustrate visitors who want a quick airport transfer, broad nightlife or a large resort with many restaurants.
Kingston is usually the more sensible airport. The road transfer commonly takes about two and a half to three and a half hours depending on traffic, weather and the hotel’s position along the Portland coast.
Treasure Beach and the south coast for community-led stays
Treasure Beach refers to a group of bays and communities in St Elizabeth. The area has fishing beaches, villas, small hotels, cookshops and local restaurants. The stay feels residential and spread out.
This region suits travelers who want a slower social rhythm and more contact with local businesses. Many properties rely on community guides, drivers, cooks and fishermen. A villa with a kitchen or cook can work especially well for families and groups.
Beach and sea conditions

Hurricane Melissa hit western and southern Jamaica hard. Recovery remains uneven. The official list checked in June shows many small south coast properties open, a few closed and one large resort listing November 18, 2026 for reopening.
Roads, beaches and individual businesses may recover on different schedules. Ask the accommodation about the final approach road, water service, power backup, nearby restaurants and the current status of planned outings.

Kingston for music, food and city culture
Kingston is the right base when the trip centres on reggae history, restaurants, museums, galleries, nightlife, business or the Blue Mountains. It is Jamaica’s capital and functions as a working city.
Most beach-first visitors skip Kingston because the city does not offer the easy resort shoreline found in Negril or Montego Bay. That choice makes sense for a short swimming holiday. New Kingston
New Kingston is a practical first base. It has business hotels, restaurants, offices and easier access to several central districts. Taxis and drivers are simple to arrange.
The area is built for city movement rather than beach walking. Choose a hotel with breakfast or nearby cafés when early starts are planned. Traffic can add time even when two places look close on a map.
Downtown and the waterfront
Downtown places you near the waterfront, historic streets, markets and parts of the city’s arts district. It suits travelers who want direct access to public history and current city life.
Use a local guide or trusted driver for a first visit. Activity and safety conditions change by block and time of day. A waterfront hotel can work well when city tours are arranged in advance.
The hills above Kingston
Stays in the hills give cooler air and easier access to Blue Mountain roads. They suit couples, hikers and short breaks after city days.

Kingston in 2026
All properties shown on the official Kingston reopening list were marked open when checked. Norman Manley International Airport is operating and is the natural arrival point for the city, Port Antonio and many eastern itineraries.
Kingston suits solo travelers, food-focused visitors, music fans, business trips and returning visitors. Families can also enjoy the city with planned museums, gardens and mountain days. It is a weaker match for travelers who want to step from the hotel onto a broad swimming beach.
Splitting the stay without losing whole days
Two bases work best when the second region changes the experience and the transfer follows a logical route. Seven or eight nights usually support two bases only when the pairing is efficient. Ten nights gives you more room.
Negril and Montego Bay
This is the easiest west-coast pairing. The drive usually takes 75 to 100 minutes between the main hotel areas. Spend the longer portion in Negril and use Montego Bay for one or two nights near an early flight, a wedding or resort event.
A seven-night trip could use five nights in Negril and two in Montego Bay. The second stop should have a clear purpose. Moving only to experience another similar beach hotel creates extra work with limited gain.
Kingston and Port Antonio

Negril and Ocho Rios

Use it for nine or ten nights rather than a short week. Four nights in Ocho Rios and five or six in Negril gives each region enough time. Choose an open-jaw flight plan only if current air schedules and ground costs make sense.
Montego Bay and Treasure Beach
This pairing works for travelers who want resort convenience followed by a smaller south coast stay. The drive commonly takes two to three hours.
Use Montego Bay for the first or final night when flight timing helps. Spend most of the trip in Treasure Beach if the south coast is the main interest.
Kingston and Ocho Rios
This is a useful city and north coast combination. The drive often takes around two hours, with traffic affecting both ends.
